It’s Mother’s Day, and it’s not a coincidenc

It’s Mother’s Day, and it’s not a coincidence that this weekend I’m in a grief tending ritual held by the incredible elder Laurence Cole. I interviewed him on my podcast and did this same ritual with him last year in my local community.

This is really hard for me to talk about, and I haven’t really shared about it publicly, but… this is the first year where my mom seems to have forgotten my actual name. Of course she still knows who I am, but it’s just not the same.

A few months ago, we moved her out of her home and into an assisted living facility. Thankfully, we found a wonderful place just a few minutes from my brother in California. It feels good knowing she’s so close to family and well held.

I just visited her for the first time since the move, and honestly, she seems happier than ever. She has been suffering from dementia for a few years now, and it’s progressed to the point where she can’t live alone anymore.

This Mother’s Day feels potent and tough. I’ve realized there’s no longer a family home to return to. And that my mom probably only has a few more years left. Because of the disease, I’ll never again have the experience of being mothered by her.

And still, this journey has been deeply healing. I’ve watched my mom become this giddy, joyful version of herself, almost toddler-like in the way she sees the world. I feel really lucky, because some people with dementia turn mean or aggressive. But my mom has gone the other direction. [continued in comments]

Last fall, my bee mentor and I were checking on my hives when we discovered my biggest hive was missing their queen.

No queen means the colony won’t survive, and it was a bad time of year to lose a queen. No one had extra queens, but I didn’t give up on manifesting a queen in late autumn!

Some time passed and my mentor was called to rescue a wild colony from a downed tree… he found their queen. A few days later he brought them to my hive, but it wasn’t as simple as just “plopping” them in.

My bees needed to accept this new queen, and the new rescued bees. At first, they weren’t responding to the queen. Some bees fought off the new bees, and some started to leave the hive in a mass exodus of bees.

It was questionable if they’d make it. If they didn’t accept the new queen, and if the old bees fought the new bees, they’d collapse. The only way to survive would be to accept her, each other, and come together.

When I checked in a few days later, there the queen was, alive and well, with the old bees and new bees living together in peace.

This reminded me of what’s true in these times: It’s not about the one leader (that you give power to); it’s about finding a way to come together and serve the greater good of the hive.

The only way forward for the bees was to find unity… maybe that’s something humans can learn from the bees. 🐝

There used to be a great White Pine out past my be

There used to be a great White Pine out past my bee hives. I called it The Hawk’s Tree. It was massive, like two pines in one, but one half had been long dead.

Year after year, hawks would land there. They courted, nested, raised a baby nearby. I looked out at that tree every single day.

And somewhere along the way, I quietly said to myself, “When this tree is gone… maybe it’s time for me to leave too.”

I thought I had years left. But last week, while I was visiting family in California, it fell.

A random wind squall on a calm day snapped it at the base. I woke up, looked out the window, and it was just… gone. I ran outside and cried. Hysterically.

I wept for the tree, for my mom’s decline, for my nephew’s school tragedy, for clients, sisters, the collective, the Earth.

As I cried on the tree’s fallen body, a hawk circled overhead. Did it feel the loss too?

And yet… something else emerged.

That evening, I sat and realized: the sky seemed wider. The land more open. I could see the mountains, the stars.

Later that night, in the exact clearing where the tree had been, I saw Jupiter—the planet of expansion—shining through.

And I thought: What if this tree returned to the Earth so something new could grow, built on the rich compost of its love?

Grief is grief. Loss is loss. If something touched your heart, it’s real. It matters.

Maybe you’re feeling a loss too? If so, I want you to know:
It’s safe to grieve.
It’s also safe to trust that something new is finding its way to you.

This is the rebalancing. The expansion from the void.
And even, especially, on the other side of loss… there is beauty.
